You Are (Mostly) Like (Most) Other People

this is for my friend, Gibbs.
‐———-‐—————————————–

you are (mostly) like (most) other people.

you will love a band as a teenager
(then realise it was just okay)

you will pick at your pimples
(and make it much, much worse)

you will feel alone, and misunderstood
(and forget that we do too)

you will argue with your elders
(before you learn they were right)

you will put up with your elders
(when they don’t learn they were wrong)

you will feel like nobody will miss you
(but we will)

you will forget why you keep going
(and we’ll be there to remind you)

you will hate your reflection
(and think we love ours)

you will slip away from the party
you will leave the call
you will stop laughing
you will stop going out

(and we will follow you,
and we will call you back,
and we will cry with you,
and we will come to you)

let me show you my scars,
and tell you the stories.

let me say ‘me too,’
and ‘i do’

because, for better or for worse
you are (mostly) like (most) other people.

and

you will get through it, too.
